Cube World - Review

18.00.00

Are you looking for a voxelbased RPG? Eventually a mix between Minecraft and World of Warcraft? Well, there is not a better answer, than Cube World made by an indie software developer known as Wollay.

Before you read my review of this golden game, please keep in mind that everything you read here is based on experiences from the alpha version of the game and can be subject to change.

Gameplay

As I already said earlier, Cube World is a voxelbased RPG game, which basicly means that it's a Role Playing Game made up of cubes. You are able to play both single- and multiplayer, so that means no matter where you are, you will always be able to play, internet connection or not. Your characters are bound to the account, and can be used in both single- and multiplayer, so technically you can level your character in singeplayer, and then go to a multiplayer server and own the low-level noobs.

There aren't any official servers hosted by Picroma, that you can just connect to like you see in World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, etc. Instead in functions abit like the server concept in Minecraft, where players can host a server from their own computers.

In Cube World there is a bunch of different races that you can play. Humans, Elves, Frogmen, Orcs and Goblins are just some of them. When you have chosen your race, you have to choose one of four classes, Rogue, Mage, Warrior or Ranger. A short description would be:

Rogues are agile melee fighters specialized on stealth and evasion. They can wield daggers, fist weapons and longswords. Their specializations are Ninja and Assassin.

Mages use wands, staffs, and bracelets to cast powerful spells to attack enemies, heal allies and protect themselves. They can specialize on Fire and Water.

Warriors are heavily armored melee fighters. They can wield one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons and shields. Their specializations are Berserker and Guardian.

Rangers are ranged classes that can use bows, crossbows and boomerangs to attack their enemies from a distance. Their specializations are Sniper and Scout.

Cube World is open world, which means you will be running around in an endless world, with cities, dungeons, camps, collectable plants and much more. There will be mobs in different levels, but, if I just have to go back to World of Warcraft, it is not like you see in other RPG games, where there are areas for each 10 level, at least not to the same extent, you aren't able to see the mobs exact level, but their names have different colors depending on their difficulty compared to your level.

The leveling is quite slow, compared to much games I've played, this is especially when playing alone, and personally I had to play together with my friend untill I got to a higher level, before I found it funny to go around alone slaying mobs.

Another cool thing with Cube World, that you don't really see anywhere else is the crafting, you can cook food and camps, craft weapons, shields, armor and more. That might sounds normally, but after you have crafted weapons and armor, you can upgrade them, modify the look and much more.
You'll be able to, depending on your adventure skills, use a hang glider, riding mounts, sailing and more.

With that, we are ending off our little section of gameplay, and let's jump right into the graphics.

Graphics

There isn't really much to say about the graphics, it is basicly plain colours on cubes, and then just alot of cubes. A real lot of cubes. But for this game it actually functions suprisingly good, even though it can be a bit monotonous after many hours of gaming. There is a simple UI which fits good into the rest of the game.

The map in Cube World, is basicly the whole world seen from a higher position, which means it is a 3d map, and after a bit of time, getting used to it, it is really neat, and a cool way to navigate around.

Advantages / Disadvantages

Advantages
  • Both single- and multiplayer
  • Open world
  • Advanced crafting/modification
  • Alot of different races to choose between
  • LAN and player run servers (This is both an advantage and a disadvantage in my eyes)

Disadvantages
  • Slow leveling
  • No servers run by company (See last advantage)

Final Comment

We are finally here, the end of the review. Man.. This is only alpha, I simply can't wait for the upcoming updates, that according to the information from Wollay, just will be much better and with much more content. I can nothing but recommend this game!
